Viva La Vista!

This morning I successfully installed Microsoft's latest operating system, Vista Ultimate. No not the beta versions nor one of the Release Candidates, but the final Release to Manufacturer (RTM) cut. This cut actually allows me to span my desktop across my two LCD monitors using my nVidia 7900 GT, a feat that could not be accomplished in any other version combined with nVidia drivers.

The install took a bit longer than I expected, about two days in the making. This was not due to the Vista installer itself, but what I had to do to prepare my drives to accept the new image. I had been dual booting XP and RC1 across two spindles. When I tried to image, to another hard drive, my Windows XP partition, I ran into boot loader hell. After multiple attempts of imaging and re-imaging, I resorted to using VistaBoot Pro, which ended up corrupting the BCD (boot configuration data.) Thinking that I would have to image this new drive once again, I took one last stab at running fixmbr and fixboot from the Windows XP Recovery Console and voila, it worked! Now I am up and running on the new 160GB drive I had laying around that is dual-booting Vista and XP. I plan from this point forward to utilize Vista as my primary O/S, only resorting to XP for legacy reach back.

I also installed the new Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate and to my surprise, it asked only for my email account and password, it did the rest. It successfully set up all three of my Gmail accounts, which require SSL access, without any of the usual pop.gmail.com or smtp.gmail.com configurations. I will continue to work through the new Office suite and give my second impressions at a later date.
